Background:
The Northern Cape Tourism Authority, supported by the National Convention Bureau of South African Tourism and in collaboration with the Northern Cape Tourism Authority and the Northern Cape Economic Development Agency, will be hosting the inaugural Tourism Investment Forum Africa (TIFA) 2023. Held under the theme “Forging Global Partnerships for Inclusive Local Economic Development Through Sustainable Investment”, the Forum is scheduled for 7 – 9 June 2023, at the African Vineyard Hotel on Cannon Island Upington, South Africa.

The Forum aims to promote tourism and related investment, finance solutions and opportunities between African countries and the rest of the World. Being “a global platform for local action”,the conference affords the host and other participating destinations a platform to promote their investment climate and opportunities to investors with a view to attracting the investment required to ensure sustainable economic growth and development.  Invited delegates will include local and international private sector business leaders, government ministers, senior government officials, development finance institutions, financial institutions, private investors, investment promotion agencies, destination management organisations and members of the diplomatic corps.

The host destination (South Africa, Northern Cape) and other participating African countries will present investment opportunities and market-ready projects in the tourism and related sectors at the Forum.

The Key Objectives of the Tourism Investment Forum Africa are to:

1.Provide an opportunity to raise awareness, provide information about the investment climate of the destination and promote the destination’s priority programmes and investment projects;

2.Promote the destination as an investment destination and market its tourism and other investment

      projects;

3.Connect project owners with investors through packaging and presentation of pre-selected investment opportunities and projects;

4.Facilitate the establishment of business contacts between stakeholders and investors which can lead to the development of concrete projects;

5.Create opportunities for trade, business and investment facilitation for tourism and related products within local host communities;

6.Facilitate an exchange of knowledge and insights on key trends and developments in the investment, travel and tourism; and

7.Profile and promote the region as an attractive location for business events.

Why The Northern Cape and  Upington ?
A growing investment and business travel destination by industrialisation and renewable energy investments. A growing adventure and bio diversity economy tourism plant driven increased investments in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Augrabies Falls, North Bank of the Orange River in Upington, and others.

Upington International Airport which offers increased opportunities for cargo and passenger traffic. Gateway into SADC – It borders on four other provinces, the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the countries of Namibia and Botswana to the north, making it an ideal gateway to West African and other international markets. New Industrial Corridor being developed – Namakwa Special Economic Zone (NSEZ), the Kathu Industrial Park (KIP) and the Upington Industrial Park (UIP). 

New deep sea port to be developed in Boegoebaai near Port Nolloth. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is a partner in the application to run the Upington IP and has allocated 55ha for the creation of an aviation park to store and maintain aircraft, and a further 30ha for commercial development.

60% of the R200bn in Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme projects in South Africa are located in the Northern Cape, represented by companies from Australia, Canada, Italy, France, UK, Norway, Spain, China, Saudi Arabia, Ireland and the Netherlands.
